Article by Zica Cristian, volunteer within GIL Sector 1.

The education system in Romania is constantly evolving to adapt to the requirements and changes of modern society.  However, there is a persistent need to introduce new subjects into schools to prepare students for the challenges and opportunities of the 21 century. This article explores the need to introduce new useful subjects in Romanian schools and the benefits brought by this change.

Education for life skills

An essential part of preparing students for life after school is to develop the practical skills needed to become responsible and adapted citizens.  Subjects such as financial education, effective communication skills, conflict resolution and informed decision-making could be introduced to help students acquire essential skills in managing everyday life.

Education for Technology and Programming

In the digital age in which we live, technological knowledge has become essential.  Introducing subjects to teach students about programming, cybernetics, cybersecurity, and computational thinking would help them understand and adapt to technology in a deeper way.  These skills not only prepare them for future jobs, but also develop critical thinking and problem solving.

Education for mental and emotional health

In an increasingly hectic world, students’ mental and emotional health is as important as their academic development.  By introducing a subject that addresses mental health, stress management, interpersonal relationships, and emotional resilience, students would learn how to maintain their psychological balance and cope with life’s challenges.

Education for Global Citizenship

In an increasingly interconnected world, understanding global issues and developing empathy for other cultures and perspectives are becoming critical.  By introducing a global citizenship subject, students would learn about human rights, global social issues, sustainability and cultural diversity.  This would help them become informed citizens and involved in solving global problems.

Technology in the classroom

One of the most notable innovations in the education system in Bucharest was the adoption of technology in teaching and learning.  Schools have begun using tablets and laptops in the classroom to enable easy access to online educational resources, facilitate collaboration among students, and develop essential digital skills in the 21st century.[21] Online learning platforms have also been implemented, giving students the opportunity to develop their knowledge at their own pace.

Transdisciplinary projects

In order to promote critical and creative thinking, schools in Bucharest have begun to implement transdisciplinary projects.  These projects involve integrating multiple disciplines to solve complex problems and develop problem-solving skills.  Students learn to apply knowledge from different fields to address real challenges, thus preparing them for the requirements of an ever-changing professional environment

International collaboration

In the age of globalization, it is important for students to learn about different cultures and perspectives.  The educational system in Bucharest promoted international exchanges, collaborating with schools from other countries to organize cultural and educational exchange programs.  These programs not only enrich students’ experience, but also help them develop intercultural communication skills and understand the diversity of the world in which we live.

Center of Excellence and continuous Training

In order to ensure the quality of education, Bucharest has developed a Centre of Excellence and continuous Training for teachers.  This center offers opportunities for professional development, both in terms of innovative pedagogical approaches and in terms of the use of technology in the classroom.  By improving teacher skills, students indirectly benefit from an improved learning experience.

  1. Competency-based assessment

The education system in Bucharest has evolved toward a competence-based assessment, focusing more on the deep understanding and practical application of knowledge, rather than mechanical memorization of information.  Students are encouraged to solve complex problems, collaborate and develop the skills essential to success in life.

The importance of introducing “good manners” in schools in Bucharest

In an ever-changing world, where technology and the fast pace of everyday life often dominate discussions, a concern for the integral development of young people is increasingly emerging.  In this context, the introduction of “good manners” in schools in Bucharest becomes an essential topic of debate.  Education should not be limited to academic knowledge, but should also include aspects related to the formation of a balanced, respectful and socially adapted personality.

Developing interpersonal relationships: Introducing the matter of “good manners” could help students understand the importance of healthy interpersonal relationships.  This topic could address topics such as effective communication, active listening, conflict resolution and collaboration.  Students would acquire skills essential to their day-to-day interactions, preparing them for a successful social and professional life.

Respect for others: Education in good manners can encourage respect for cultural, social and gender diversity.  Thus, students will learn to be more open to those around them and develop empathy.  In a society where tolerance and acceptance are increasingly important, these skills can help create a more harmonious community.

Improving self-confidence: Knowing and applying the rules of behavior can increase students’ confidence in their own abilities.  When they feel confident about how they interact with others and in different social situations, they will address challenges with a positive attitude and be able to express their opinion in an appropriate way.

Preparing for professional success: Communication skills and appropriate behavior are essential in the professional world.  Students will be better prepared to interact with peers, clients and superiors in a respectful and professional way.  Thus, the introduction of “good manners” could help increase their chances of having a successful career.

Promoting civic values: Education in good manners can contribute to promoting civic values and ethical conduct in society.  Students will understand the importance of respect for the rules, the environment and the well-being of the community.  A generation of responsible and engaged citizens can be formed.

The introduction of useful new subjects in Romanian schools is essential to prepare students for life in a complex and constantly changing society.  Education should go beyond just teaching academic knowledge and develop practical skills, critical thinking and social awareness.  Through such changes, students will be better prepared to make their way into the modern world.

The education system in Bucharest has undergone a significant transformation in recent years, focusing on innovation and adaptability to meet the changing needs of students and modern society.  By implementing innovative strategies and advanced technologies, education in Bucharest becomes more relevant and attractive for students and teachers alike.
